USA
Two people in the eastern USA have written in
expressing an almost obscene love of extra cheese and pepperoni.
Karl in New Jersey says pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms are popular
in his area but he prefers them with "everything or plain." He also says that
he
has visited Michigan, and ham and pineapple pizzas are very popular
there.
Anthony in Montana says popular toppings are cheese, tomato, pineapple,
bacon, sausage, ham, and ground beef; and he favours all of the above!
Coye in Texas says anything and everything is popular there, but
his favourite is Portabello mushrooms. He also prefers lighter
toppings like roasted veggies and feta and goat cheeses
and also goes light on the mozzarella.
From Tennessee, Amy says popular toppings are peppers, onions,
olives, pepperoni, ham, and sausage. She likes pepperoni, ham, extra cheese,
and offers this message: "Whoever invented pizza, I LOVE YOU!!!!"
Bette in Connecticut says that the "normal" toppings are popular, and
she likes BBQ chicken, and also mushroom, pepperoni, and anchovies. She
also comments "UGH! Don't even get me GOING on how
wrong Hawaiian Pizza is. (gags)"
In Vermont, garlic and spinich are popular, but Kivy likes
broccoli, eggplant, garlic, and black olives!
Patti in Maine loves anchovies, eggplant, and goat cheese on her pizza!
Kerry in Maryland says pepperoni is popular, but prefers mushrooms!
Bridget in Kentucky says pepperoni and green peppers are
popular toppings, but she wants veggies on her pizza!
Nancy in Massachusetts says that pinapple is popular, as well as taco
pizzas, but
she likes her pizza with buffalo mozzarella,fresh basil and a canned tomato
sauce.
She also says "you have to try a pizzeria in naples if you go to italy , ask
for it margerita..."
In Oregon, Bob says pineapple and canadian bacon are popular,
but he prefers anchovies, sausage, and mushrooms.
Also in Massachusetts, Megan says pepperoni is popular, and she likes
pepperoni and bacon. She also notes that "Pizza ROX!"
From Michigan, Ken says popular toppings include pepperoni, cheese,
Italian sausage,
green peppers, olives, etcetera, and his favourites are Italian sausage, mushrooms,
and black olives. He also says that he "never put hamburger on pizza. Ate
at Ginos
East years ago. My dining partner and I each picked a couple of toppings.
He
picked hamburger, seemed to bury the whole pie. I am now trying to
build "theme pizzas", for example limiting the toppings to three or
four but must compliment each other, ie plum tomatoes, Italiain sausage,
peppers, and olives.... could eat pizza six days a week."
In New York, Bob says all toppings are popular, but he prefers
roasted red peppers, pepperoni, Italian sausage, and bacon.
He also comments, "Ermm.. Umm... Pizza Is Perfect. :)"
Ruth in Washington says that popular toppings in her area are
cheese, pepperoni,sausage,olives, mushrooms, etcetera. Her personal
favourites are any combination of pepperoni, plenty of cheese, canadian bacon,
olives, and
mushrooms, and she also likes anchovies. She comments, "My husband and I recently
had some gourmet chicken garlic pizza with a non-tomato sauce (I'm not sure
what it was, but I'd like to find out how to make it) and we loved it!"
Bruce from Michigan says pepperoni, cheese, mushrooms, and onions are
popular, and
he likes pepperoni and cheese. Bruce says, "I love pizza!"
Also from Michigan, Kristin says that while pepperoni and cheese are
popular, she
likes Pizza Hut's Chicken Veggie Deluxe! She also comments, "I might like
the chicken veggie,
but my boyfriend and I always get pepperoni, pineapple, ham and sausage! Yummy!"
In Virginia, Chris says popular toppings are pepperonni, sausage, mushrooms,
onions, and green peppers. He likes extra cheese and pepperoni. He says, "New
York Style
pizzas are my favorite. There is one place called Brother's where I get extra
cheese and pepperoni.
Another Roberto's (now called Mama Felicia's) where just an extra cheese pizza
is good OR the
Roberto's Special which has 9 toppings. Usually I would prefer extra cheese
and pepperonni
but they make it so all nine toppings blend together perfectly. As far as
commercial
pizza goes, I really like Pizza Hut's New Yorker with extra cheese and no
other topping.
However that is the extent of what I like there. Papa John's is a decent commericial
pizza
place all around. Generally though it is small pizza places that are much
better
especially when the one who makes the pizza grew up in Italy."
Carin in Tennessee doesn't pay attention to what other people eat,
but says
that her favourites are Pepperoni, canadian bacon, and PINEAPPLE!!
T.J. in New York says he like sausage on his pizza!
David in California says jalapenos are popular, and he likes jalapenos
and pineapple on
his pizza. He also says "when in Orange County of Southern California stop
in
to The Pizza Club - 1279 E. La Habra Blvd in La Habra - 562-694-5888,
for great pizza at a great family price. Just up the way from Knotts
Berry Farm."
Also in California, Wendy says that pepperoni, and ham and pineapple
pizzas are
popular, and she likes the ham and pineapple. She says "California has a lot
of gourmet pizza with really strange toppings - it's impossible to name them
all.
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Phyllis says that popular toppings include
ham, pepperoni, onion,
lots of cheese, mushrooms, and sausage. Her favourites include pineapple,
mushrooms,
and green olives - yes, all on same pizza! She also comments "I am extremely
lactose intolerant and
allergic to milk (yes, I live in the Dairy State). I wish somebody would make
a cheese substitute
that didn't taste like left over shoe leather (SOY) so I can enjoy pizza without
getting sick.
Does anyone know of a good substitute?" I would imagine it would be
hard to find a good cheese
substitute in Wisconsin, so if anyone knows of one, please e-mail me, and
I will pass it
on to Phyllis. As a wanna-be vegan, I would be interested in this too!
In Hawaii, Albert says that he has never heard of anyone there having
pineapple on their pizza! His favourite toppings are pepperoni, cheese, and
mushrooms;
and he says "The best pizza I ever had is Pepe's Pizza in New Haven CT. The
Recovery Room (New
London, CT) and Pizza Works (Mystic, CT) make excellent pizza also. Some of
the best
pizza I have ever had is my own home made pizza."
Antoine in Oklahoma says that pepperoni is popular, and he likes
pepperoni and pineapple. He also suggests that I "should make a pie or bar
graph showing the percentage of people who like certain kinds of toppings."
Does anyone know how to go about doing this?
Ed says that in New Jersey, "Anything goes, even Kosher!" but
he likes to top his pizza with meats.
Eric says that in New York, cheese, pepperoni, pineapple, and anchovies
are
popular, but he prefers just cheese.
Cinthia says that sausage, beef, pepperoni, and lately anchovies are popular
in
her area, but she prefers bacon and chicken on her pizza! She also says "I
work for domino's ...
very true - people do order extremely weird things. Secret... our canadian
bacon is really ham....

Billy in Florida says that extra
cheese, pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms are popular,
and he likes extra cheese with pepperoni and mushrooms - preferably hand tossed!
In Connecticut, Kate says that bacon, spinach,
and clam pizza (with white sauce) are
popular. She likes the bacon and spinach with red sauce, and says "New
Haven, CT has the best pizza
anywhere. Sally's and Pepe's are the top, but Madern is great too. It's shocking,
but true."
Canada
From southwestern Ontario, Claude says the popular toppings are "pepperonni,
sausage, bacon, hamburger, ham, anchovies, tuna, mushrooms, green
peppers, red peppers, hot peppers, jalapino peppers, onions, green
olives, black olives, pineapple and of course, the entire list of cheeses.
Don't forget the different flavoured stuffed crusts!" Pepperoni, bacon, and
double cheese are his favourite toppings, and he offers this advice: "The
best
pizza I've ever had came from the Cortina Pizza chain located in Northern
Ontario.
No one makes a 'Kitchen Sink' or a 'Garbage Can' like Cecil Johnson from Lively,
Ontario."
Also in Ontario, Sue says popular toppings are basic cheese and pepperoni,
pineapple, bacon,
and double cheese. Her favourites are blue cheese, pineapple, and any vegetables.
Sue
says "I also like sweet pizzas; favourite toppings: apple sauce, bananas,
strawberries, chopped
nuts, cinnamon, brown sugar... topped off with whipped cream (not the canned
kind!) and
served with yoghurt, ice-cream or sour cream! The dessert that's a meal!!"
Also in Ontario, an anonymous reader says that popular toppings include
sun dried
tomatoes, pesto, and potatoes, and his favourites are pepperoni, sun dried
tomatoes, and garlic.
From Manitoba, MaryAnn says BBQ chicken is a popular topping,
but she prefers green peppers and mushrooms!
From Alberta, Colin says popular toppings include pepperoni, bacon,
black
olives, ham and pineapple. His favourites are bacon, black olives, and pepperoni.
Billy in Winfield, British Columbia says that popular toppings include
pepperoni and mushrooms or ham and pineapple, but he prefers
capicolli,pepperoni,back bacon and ground beef. He also
says that feta cheese is a popular add-on.
Ginette in Victoriaville Québec says that "alldressed" pizzas
are
popular there, but she'll take just pepperoni and cheese on hers.
JoAnne in Montreal says that everything is popular, but she likes mushrooms
on her pizza! She also asks "Where can I get fun facts, ideas for decorating
a teachers lounge
for National Pizza with everything but anchovies Day?" I'm not sure why
the anchovies are being excluded from this fun day, but if anyone has any
ideas, send
them to me and I will pass them along to JoAnne.
England
In Leisctershire, Lenni says that apart from the usual, branston pickle
with
gerkins is popular, and it is good, but he prefers ham and pineapple.
Joan in London says popular toppings are "ham, mushrooms,
anchovies... oh there are too many!" She likes ham and mushrooms.
Czech Republic
Zdenek says salami and mushrooms are popular, but he prefers tuna fish. He
also would like to see some original recipes, so if anyone has one, send it
in
and I'll post that on a seperate recipes page! Good idea, Zdenek! :)
Syria
Mohammad says that black olives and mushrooms are popular, but he has no
favourite toppings. He adds "In fact, the pizza is something new to my country,
and I think this is the influence of the west culture. There are many people
who like
to eat it. For me, I've tried it in Syria and in France with different toppings,
mostly when I go out with friends."
New Zealand
From the South Island, Puptank says popular toppings are olives, grapes,
anchovies, chicken, miscellaneous salami type sausage things, peppers,
chilli, mushrooms, tomatoes, onion, eggs, beef, ham, pineapple, and different
types of sauces to match the toppings. Also, homemade pizza often has canned
spaghetti in/on it. Puptank prefers ham and pineapple with barbeque sauce,
and says
he "wouldn't be surprised if people here ate whitebait and paua (called abalone
overseas,
I think) on pizza, though I don't think I've seen it done... or want to see
it done!"
He also gave us these choices, copied from the Pizza Haven menu:
"Kiwi Great: Mozzarella cheese with a hearty serving of bacon, eggs,
onions with traditional tomato sauce." and "Fisherman's Catch:
Mozzarella cheese, scrumptious mussels, clam, shrimp, baby
octopus, calamari and prawns, sprinkled with lemon pepper
and traditional tomato or creamy cheese sauce (optional anchovies)."
Israel
Luis in Israel writes that tuna, onions, olives, and mushrooms are popular,
and that he likes tuna, onions, and olives on his pizza!
The Netherlands
Peter writes in to say he likes mushrooms and gorgonzola on his pizza!
Greece
Anthi says Xoriatiki is popular - it's a Greek pizza, made with feta
cheese,
olives, tomato, and pepper. She likes her pizza with ham and mushrooms!
Morocco
In Casablanca, Kabil says that crust is popular, but he prefers vegetables
on his pizza! As a manager of a Moroccan pizza restaurant, he should know
what's good!
Thailand
In Bankok, Robin say squid is a popular topping! She also says she
used to live in Hungary, where chicken liver is popular!
Finland
Mika in Espoo says that popular toppings include salami, ham, onions,
mushrooms, tomato, and bluecheese, and prefers weird combinations. Mika also
comments "Have you tasted reindeer, crushed Tyrkisk Peber candies (pepper
flavour) or kiwi
fruits? Well you gotta try everething. I'm really a fanatic and I want to
try new recipes. And of
course I used to work in pizza restaurant. Nowadays I do pizza only once a
week (fridays). When
you eat the first slice of pizza, you have to get another and another and..."
Brasil
Milton in São Paulo says that Muzzarela is popular, and he likes
pizza with four cheeses. He
comments, "Pizzas are very popular in São Paulo. I saw once in a research
that
it is one of the cities that sells better pizzas."
Belgium
In Belgium, Sue says that fried eggs are a very popular
addition on pizzas! She prefers gorgonzola, chicken and artichoke hearts,
but says
they are "hard to find here though - I have to make them myself!"
Russia
In Tatarstan, Arthur is not familier with pizza, but says "My best
regards
to the cooks of Italian food!"
South Korea
Hyon says peppers are a popular pizza topping, but he prefers
pepperoni! He also says "I like pizza!"
Turkey
Hakan in Istanbul says that mozarella, sausage, corn, sudjuk, and green
peppers are very popular. He likes Tony's Pizza sicilian minced meat and herbs
pizza,
and also cheddar and shrimp. Hakan says "We are improving our pizza following
every
innovation on the subject... Therefore I will be glad to exchange ideas and
experiences!!!"
I don't know Hakan, that chedder and shrimp would be hard to improve upon!
